Red flying fox shark – In Store Pick Up Only

The “red flying fox shark” is a common name for a species of freshwater fish, not a true shark or a flying fox (the mammal). The scientific name for this fish is Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus.

Appearance: It has an elongated body with a yellowish-white belly and an olive to dark brown back. A distinctive brownish-black stripe runs from its mouth to its tail, with a gold-colored stripe above it. The name “shark” comes from its triangular dorsal fin and elongated body shape.

Habitat and Origin: This fish is native to the rivers and streams of Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo, Java, and Sumatra. It prefers fast-flowing water with rocky or sandy substrates.

Behaviour: The red flying fox is a bottom-dweller and is known for being an excellent algae eater. While it is generally peaceful in a community tank with other fish, it can be territorial with its own kind or other similar-looking species. It’s often recommended to keep them singly or in large groups (five or more) to diffuse aggression.

Aquarium Care: It’s a popular choice for aquarists due to its active nature and algae-eating habits. They need a well-maintained tank with good filtration and water flow. They can reach up to 15 cm in length and have a lifespan of 5 to 8 years.

It’s important not to confuse the “red flying fox” with the “Siamese flying fox” (Crossocheilus siamensis) or the “flying fox bat.” While all are named “flying fox,” they are different species.

Keep with similar sized fish, such as Dwarf Cichlids, Mollies, Rainbowfish, Catfish or Large Tetras such as Congo or Emperor Tetras.
