Thesefishoriginally come from Paraguay; Rio Paranbasinin Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. Its also known from the Rio Uruguay, Uruguay.

Thisfishcan get to eight inches in total length in the wild, as a rule not as large in Aquariums. This species was discovered in 1972 by Heiko Bleher, from Frankfurt, West Germany and Thomas Horeman, London, England. Thefishseen in the hobby are captive-bred and wild caught specimens are rare.
