The Orange Storm Clownfish is a designer variant of the ocellaris clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris). It is a captive-bred fish known for its striking and unique blotchy pattern of vibrant orange and white, which often covers a significant portion of its body and face. This pattern is a result of a multi-generational selective breeding process.
Key Characteristics
Appearance: The Orange Storm Clownfish has a bright orange base color with large, irregular white bars or spots. Unlike the classic ocellaris clownfish with its three distinct white bands, the Orange Storm’s white pattern is more variable and can be as unique as a fingerprint on each individual.
Origin: This is a “designer clownfish,” meaning it was created through selective breeding in captivity, not found in the wild. It was developed by breeding a Black Storm Clownfish with an orange ocellaris clownfish over several generations to remove the black coloration.
Temperament: They are generally peaceful and have a similar temperament to the regular ocellaris clownfish. They can be kept singly or in pairs. As with other clownfish, the dominant fish will become female and can be territorial, especially in a smaller tank.
Hardiness: Captive-bred clownfish like the Orange Storm are known for being very hardy and more adaptable to aquarium conditions than their wild-caught counterparts, making them a good choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
Aquarium Care Guide
Tank Size: A minimum of 20-30 gallons is recommended for a single clownfish or a pair. Larger tanks are always better, especially if you plan to keep other fish.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 75-82F (24-28C)
pH: 8.1-8.4
Salinity: 1.020-1.026 specific gravity
Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: below 20 ppm
Diet: Orange Storm Clownfish are omnivores. They should be fed a varied diet of high-quality marine flake or pellet food, as well as frozen foods like mysis shrimp and enriched brine shrimp.
Reef Safe: Yes, they are generally considered reef-safe and will not harm corals or other invertebrates.
Host Anemone: Like other clownfish, they can form a symbiotic relationship with an anemone. Popular choices include the Bubble Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor). However, they do not require a host anemone to thrive and will often use a substitute, such as a soft coral or a favourite spot in the rockwork. If you do choose to get an anemone, be sure your aquarium and lighting can support the anemone’s specific needs.
