Key Characteristics of Fantail Goldfish:
- Body Shape: Fantails have a roundish, egg-shaped body that is shorter and more compact compared to single-tailed goldfish like Comets or Commons. They are generally wider and deeper-bodied.
- Tail Fin: This is the defining feature. Fantails possess a double caudal (tail) fin that is split completely in the middle, creating two separate, flowing lobes. Ideally, these lobes should be well-separated, held erect, and have rounded edges. The length of the tail should be proportionate to the body.
- Other Fins: They have a high, erect dorsal fin, paired pectoral fins, and paired pelvic fins. All fins should be well-developed and match the overall appearance of the fish.
- Coloration: Fantails come in a wide array of colors and patterns, including:
- Metallic: Solid colors like red, orange, yellow, white, bronze, and black, often with a metallic sheen.
- Calico: A mix of red, black, orange, and blue on a white or light background.
- Nacreous (Matt): Lacking the metallic sheen, often with pastel colors.
- Bi-colors: Two distinct colors.
- Temperament: Fantails are generally peaceful and social fish. They do well in groups of other fancy goldfish with similar body types and swimming abilities.
- Size: They can grow to a moderate size, typically reaching 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) in body length, excluding the tail.
- Lifespan: With proper care, Fantails can live for a significant amount of time, often 5-8 years, and sometimes longer in ideal conditions.
Care Requirements for Fantail Goldfish:
- Tank Size: Due to their body shape and potential size, Fantails require more space than single-tailed goldfish of the same length. A minimum of 75 liters (20 gallons) is recommended for a single adult Fantail. For each additional Fantail, add at least another 40 liters (10 gallons).
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: Ideally between 18-24C (65-75F), but they can tolerate slightly warmer or cooler temperatures for short periods. Avoid rapid fluctuations.
- pH: Ideally between 6.5 and 7.5.
- Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm.
- Nitrate: Keep below 20 ppm with regular water changes.
- Filtration: Like all goldfish, Fantails produce a significant amount of waste. A powerful and efficient filtration system is crucial to maintain water quality.
- Substrate: Smooth sand or fine gravel is best to prevent injury to their fins. Avoid sharp or rough substrates.
- Decorations: Provide smooth decorations without sharp edges. Ensure there’s plenty of open swimming space, as they are not as agile as single-tailed goldfish.
- Diet: Fantails are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet of high-quality goldfish flakes or pellets. Supplement with fresh or frozen vegetables (like peas, spinach, and zucchini) and occasional protein-rich treats. Be mindful not to overfeed, as their digestive system can be more sensitive.
- Water Changes: Regular water changes (25-50% weekly) are essential to remove waste and maintain stable water parameters.
Things to Consider with Fantail Goldfish:
- Swimming Ability: Their double tail and rounder body make them less efficient swimmers compared to single-tailed goldfish. Avoid keeping them with very fast-swimming fish that might outcompete them for food.
- Potential Health Issues: Their body shape can sometimes make them more prone to swim bladder issues. Maintaining excellent water quality and feeding a balanced diet can help mitigate this.
- Tail Damage: Their delicate double tails can be susceptible to damage from rough decorations or aggressive tank mates.
