The Blueberry Tetra (Hyphessobrycon wadai) is a relatively new and stunning addition to the freshwater aquarium hobby. Known for its vivid violet-blue sheen and peaceful nature, this small tetra lights up any planted aquarium. These tank-bred specimens are hardy, easy to care for, and best enjoyed in schools of six or more where their colors intensify and their graceful schooling behavior shines.
Iridescent Blue-Purple Hue: Glistens like a ripe blueberry under aquarium lighting.
Rare and Eye-Catching: Still uncommon in the hobby but easy to keep.
Peaceful Schooling Fish: Great for nano tanks and planted community setups.
Tank Bred and Hardy: Adapted to aquarium life and water parameters.
Natural Habitat:
Originally discovered in the Rio Aripuan region of Brazil, Blueberry Tetras inhabit slow-moving, tannin-rich forest streams and tributaries with dense vegetation and soft, acidic water.
Aquascaping:
Plants: Pair with fine-leaved plants like Water Sprite, Frogbit, and Ludwigia for contrast.
Hardscape: Use driftwood and leaf litter to recreate their natural biotope.
Botanicals: Add Catappa leaves, alder cones, or softwood bark to release tannins and support natural behavior. for a variety of beneficial botanicals try our Botanical Combo Pack or a AquaZen Botanical Zen Pack.
Diet and Feeding:
An omnivore that readily accepts micro pellets, flake foods, and frozen or live fare like baby brine shrimp or daphnia. A varied diet rich in color-enhancing ingredients helps maintain their vibrant appearance.
Tank Mates and Compatibility:
Peaceful and social, Blueberry Tetras do best with other gentle fish such as Pencilfish, Corydoras, smaller Rasboras, and peaceful Dwarf Cichlids. Avoid aggressive or large fish that may outcompete or intimidate them.
Shrimp Safe:
Generally safe with adult dwarf shrimp, though small shrimp fry may be at risk. A well-planted tank with hiding places helps shrimp colonies coexist peacefully.
Breeding:
An egg-scattering species. Provide soft water, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and remove adults post-spawning to avoid egg predation. Fry require tiny food like infusoria or powdered fry food.
