Cameroon Moss (scientific name: Plagiochilaceae sp. ‘Cameroon’ or Taxiphyllum sp. ‘Cameroon’) is a popular and distinctive aquatic plant often used in aquascaping.
Appearance: It’s known for its unique, feathery, fern-like fronds and large, rounded “leaves” or segments. When fully grown, it can resemble a tiny, busy Boston Fern, creating a soft, lush texture in the aquarium.
Classification: Despite being commonly called a “moss,” it’s often identified as a species of liverwort (Plagiochilaceae sp.).
Origin: It is native to West Africa.
Aquarium Use: It’s frequently attached to driftwood, rocks, or mesh to provide a natural, mossy look. It also makes an excellent hiding place and source of biofilm for shrimp and fish fry.
Care Level: It’s generally considered hardy and easy to care for, making it suitable for both beginner and experienced hobbyists.
Lighting: It does best in low to moderate lighting.
CO2/Fertilisation: Additional CO2 is not required, and it will grow in low-tech setups, but regular liquid fertilization can encourage healthier growth.
Growth Rate: It has a slow to moderate growth rate, meaning it won’t require constant trimming, though it will benefit from occasional maintenance to maintain its shape.
