Aqualabs US Fissidens Moss, also commonly known as Phoenix Moss or Fissidens fontanus, is a highly sought-after aquatic moss in the aquarium hobby, especially popular for planted tanks and shrimp tanks. It’s known for its delicate, feathery fronds and vibrant green color, which creates a lush, natural aesthetic.

Here’s a detailed overview:

About US Fissidens Moss:

Appearance: It has a unique “phoenix feather” pattern to its leaves, which are fine, delicate, and grow in a compact, dense manner. The color ranges from a medium to deep green.
Origin: While often called “US Fissidens” in Australia, globally, the smaller variant with the phoenix feather pattern is sometimes known as “Fissidens Fox.” The confusion stems from past mislabeling in the Australian hobby. Regardless, it originates from North America and Asia.
Growth: It’s a slow-growing moss that forms dense mats. It’s an epiphytic plant, meaning it readily attaches to hardscape elements like driftwood and rocks using tiny hair-like “rhizoids.”
Aquascaping Uses:
Foreground/Midground: Excellent for creating a natural carpet or adding texture to the front or middle of your tank.
Attaching to Hardscape: Ideal for binding to driftwood, rocks, and even creating “moss trees” or “moss walls.”
Shrimp Tanks: Provides excellent hiding spots and grazing surfaces for shrimp and fish fry, as shrimp love to pick at the biofilm and organisms trapped in its fine leaves.
Benefits: Helps improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients.

Care Requirements:

Care Level: Relatively easy to care for (medium difficulty according to some sources, but generally considered suitable for beginners to experienced aquarists).
Lighting: Prefers low to moderate lighting. While it can tolerate stronger light, too much can encourage algae growth, which is its main potential problem. Aim for cooler color lights.
Temperature: Thrives in tropical water conditions, ideally between 20C – 25C . It can tolerate a wider range, but higher temperatures can lead to darker green leaves and smaller fronds.
pH Level: 5 – -7.5 but does best in slightly acidic soft water.
CO2 & Fertilizers: While not strictly required, CO2 supplementation and liquid fertilizers can significantly enhance its growth, especially in low-tech setups.
Water Flow: Benefits from good water circulation to prevent stagnant areas and algae growth.
Maintenance: Slow-growing, so it requires minimal and infrequent trimming. Regularly inspect and clean to prevent debris accumulation.
Propagation: Can be propagated by splitting or cutting off daughter plants. It attaches faster when simply placed on a suitable surface rather than being tied down.
