Albino Hoplo Catfish (Megalechis thoracata) – (No Online Purchases)
The Albino Hoplo Catfish is simply an albino variant of the standard Hoplo Catfish, most commonly Megalechis thoracata. Just like other albino animals, they lack the normal pigmentation, resulting in a distinct appearance.
Key Characteristics of Albino Hoplo Catfish:
Appearance: The most striking feature is their pale, often translucent, pinkish-white or yellowish body. Their eyes are typically red or pink due to the visible blood vessels, a hallmark of albinism. They still retain the classic armored plates and barbels of a regular Hoplo.
Size: They generally reach the same adult size as their standard colored relatives, which is typically up to 15 cm (6 inches) for Megalechis thoracata.
Lifespan: Their lifespan is also comparable, usually 5-8 years, and potentially longer with excellent care.
Temperament and Behavior: Their behavior is identical to normal Hoplo Catfish. They are peaceful, bottom-dwelling, social, and enjoy rooting through the substrate for food. They also exhibit the same bubble-nesting breeding behavior and ability to breathe atmospheric air.
Aquarium Care (largely the same as regular Hoplo Catfish):
Since albinism primarily affects coloration and not underlying physiology or behavior (beyond light sensitivity), the care requirements for Albino Hoplo Catfish are essentially the same as for their normally colored counterparts.
Tank Size: A minimum of 30-55 gallons for a small group, with larger tanks (e.g., 75 gallons or 300 liters) being better, especially if kept with other fish.
Substrate: Soft, sandy, or fine-grained smooth gravel is crucial to protect their sensitive barbels.
Decorations: Provide plenty of hiding spots with driftwood, rocks, and dense plants. Floating plants are also beneficial, as they can help diffuse light.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22-28C (72-82F)
pH: 6.5-7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water.
Filtration: Good filtration is important for maintaining water quality. They also appreciate good oxygenation and moderate flow.
Diet: Omnivorous. High-quality sinking pellets/wafers, supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and some blanched vegetables.
Tank Mates: Peaceful community fish that are not small enough to be eaten. Avoid very aggressive or fin-nipping species. They do well in groups of 3-5 or more.
Light Sensitivity: Due to their lack of pigmentation, albino fish can sometimes be more sensitive to bright light. Providing areas of shade with floating plants or decor can help them feel more comfortable. A “blue moon light tube” can be good for viewing them when they are most active (at night or in low light).
Breeding Albino Hoplo Catfish:
Breeding procedures are the same as for regular Hoplo Catfish. Males will build bubble nests, and spawning is often triggered by cool water changes. They are generally prolific breeders.
Why Choose an Albino Hoplo Catfish?
The primary reason to choose an Albino Hoplo Catfish is their unique and striking appearance. Their pale bodies and red eyes offer a beautiful contrast in an aquarium and can stand out well amongst green plants or darker substrate. They retain all the desirable qualities of the standard Hoplo hardiness, peacefulness, and interesting behaviors making them a great choice for many community tank setups.
